Dams have a negative impact on goliath catfish 1500 km upstream !!!
It was already known that the Jirau and Santo Antonio dams have a negative impact on the native fishes of the Madeira River in Brasil. Now there is also new evidence that these dams affect also goliath catfish, a migratory species, 1500 km upstream of the dams, in the Bolivian Amazon, affecting the reproductive success of this species. FAUNAGUA published an article with the preliminary results of a study done in Puerto Villarroel, situated in the spawning area of this species, and showed that the populations of this species have been reduced with 90% as a consecuence of dam implementation.
